The AE86 model was produced from 1983 to 1987 as the fourth generation model of its siblings, the Corolla Levin and Sprinter Treno, and since the fifth generation became a front-wheel drive (FF) car, it is now becoming a treasure as the last rear-wheel drive (FR) Levin/Treno.
It was in 2012 that the new Toyota 86 and its sibling, the Subaru BRZ, both named after the model of such famous cars, made their debut. One of its features is that it is equipped with Subaru's horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine, the fruit of joint development between Toyota and Subaru, and, like the AE86 model, it adopted an RWD layout in pursuit of driving fun.
In 2021, the 86 and BRZ were switched to new models. At that time, the 86 became exclusively sold under the GR (GAZOO Racing) brand, Toyota's motorsports/performance production car division, and received a name change to GR86.
In addition to the model change, the engine displacement has been increased by approximately 400 cc to improve response and flexibility for a more pleasurable driving experience, and torque has been increased.
This model is a 1/18 scale reproduction of the Toyota GR86 RZ, the highest grade of the 2nd generation 86, which was introduced in 2021.
The Toyota GR86 RZ, which has already been released in 1/43 scale and has been very well received, has been developed in a powerful and high-resolution 1/18 scale.
In designing the Toyota GR86 RZ, we extracted all details that could be reproduced based on the 3D CAD data of the actual car provided by Toyota Motor Corporation, and then designed the prototype data. We aimed to create an objective modeling of the car body, avoiding any intentional deformation that would change the shape based on the subjective view of the prototype designer. Although it is a proportional model, we have faithfully traced the detailed shapes of the back of the chassis from the actual car.
For the exterior, parts that differ from the body color are painted as separate parts as much as possible and painted by masking, etc., to avoid a loss of cleanliness. For the windows and light covers, we used injection-molded plastic parts instead of the usual transparent film to reproduce beautiful cubic surfaces. In particular, the detailed expression of the lights is more impressive than that of the 1/43 model.
Our make-up was born in a room in "Central Apartment" in Harajuku, Tokyo in 1978.
Its history begins when our representative Hideyuki Uemoto was inspired by the model culture of his area at the annual "Model Engineer Exhibition" held at Wembley Park in the United Kingdom.
Here, we will deliver the history of our company by interweaving Uemoto's own recollections.
